THE SEARCH FOR SILVER
CORNISH MINERS IN MEXICO
1824-1947
By A.C. Todd
Cornish miners went to Mexico starting in the 1820's to re-open rich silver mines which had long been idle.
This book deals with the difficulties of transporting heavy mining equipment and steam engines from Cornwall across the Atlantic and to Pachua--then 10,000 feet up in the mountains and encountering the problems of clearing old shafts, sinking new ones, perils of freighting supplies, hostile environment plus developing new techniques to replace old ones.
Adaptable as always, the Cornish settled in Mexico and intermarried with Mexicans; and finally found the bonanza that made Pachuca and Real del Monte the most productive mining districts in northern Mexico.
