THE TUDOR TIN INDUSTRY
By Allen Buckley
Under the Tudor rulers of England, Cornish tinners witnessed a great number of changes. Lode mining was replacing stream works, capital investment was increasing, control of the tin industry passed firmly to the gentry. Technology was changing mining and tin dressing practice at a rapid pace and everywhere the mines and streams of Cornwall were under pressure.
By the end of the 16TH century the world of the Cornish tinner was changed beyond recognition as a majority of tinners, formerly an independent class of worker, became mere wage earners and reliant on the whims and decisions of the wealthy.
