DRAWINGS OF THE LEVANT WHIM
by Courtney Rowe
The Levant mine with its surface workings on the cliff top near St. Just, Cornwall, ceased operating in 1930. The winding engine--or whim, had managed to survive for a few years after the mine had closed. All around Cornwall these beam engines were being destroyed and sold for scrap. Times were tough but in 1935 a group became concerned that there would not be any engines left.
They raised money to save a few of these engines and the Levant Whim was the first engine bought. This book does have several pages of text which form an introduction, most of the book consists of technical drawings of the components of the Levant Whim.
The engine is now seen in steam each year by people who visit the site of the Levant mine.
