THE LONG WINTER ENDS
By Newton Thomas
While this is a novel, it does ring true of what it was like to leave home and start out in a new land as a Cousin Jack. The author drew on personal family history to write this Cornish-American classic.
The Central character, Jim Holman, leaves Cornwall in the 19th century to work in the copper mines of Upper Michigan. He spends his first year living in a boarding house with other Cornish miners. A lot of Cornish wisdom, dialect, humor and commonly shared life experiences are witnessed.
One of the best Cornish-American culture views availabe, it has stood the test of time, having originally been published in 1941. It is now back in print.
Soft cover, 6x9, 362 pages, $19.
